I began volunteering at a local nonprofit focused on bridging the digital divide. Austin is experiencing incredible growth. Digital literacy and technical skills highlight who’s doing well and who’s not able to keep up with the speed of advanced technologies. Through this nonprofit, I hope to make a difference in bridging this chasm.
I’m reminded of the book Silicon City, written by journalist Cary McClelland, chronicling the malaise that afflicts the Bay Area especially those who weren’t afforded opportunities to excel in the tech economy.
Is it possible to reinvent Austin based on what Silicon Valley failed to do, specifically enabling the disadvantaged with digital skills? The algorithm for growth should benefit the community, not just a tiny fraction of the population.
