What I’ve learned is that travel is the best antidote to drinking too much from the local firehose. A population that doesn’t leave home much or bother to read books is where prejudice and ignorance floods the local culture. Populism becomes the lowest common denominator. International travel from America is expensive —-creating another barrier to mind expansion.
Fortunately, much of the world tends to look externally for ideas. A new Indian magazine features travel writer Pico Iyer explaining the intellectual benefits of global travel. Getting comfortable with discomfort is the ultimate character trait needed in a world designed for couch potatoes and armchair quarterbacks.
