I attended much of SXSW 2024. Don’t have the bandwidth this year. Look forward to checking out the EU at SXSW. The Europeans I know have nuanced perspectives and typically don’t get too high or too low in a world fueled by technologies and media hoopla.
The torrent of tech news in America is exciting and frightening. Recent Austin transplant Jason Calacanis interviewed SF entrepreneur Harrison Chase about the ongoing transformation of AI in every aspect of running a business, especially ones enabled by Chase’s platform. A startup can be run with fewer resources and minimal overhead. There are a few million people in position to catch this wave. Billions more could be left behind given the need for fewer workers in this new world of work.

Advocates of AI run the current White House. There are good things and terrifying prospects of a government run by AI.
What does the US citizenry do if the government only focuses on ‘business-like’ efficiency at the expense of safety nets and workforce development? What about safety and the ethical dimensions of AI impacting consumers. The CFPB was shut down rather quickly. Who are the adults in the room now?
Will the EU ensure AI governance enough to find a healthy balance of tech advancement and economic progress? Or will AI overtake the human race like the classic AC/DC song?
It’s unclear if the US or the EU will get this right in their different approaches.
