KCRW: The Japanese art of happiness: From ikigai, to ritual, to embracing old age

Travel writer Pico Iyer once said in reference to Japan, “The quintessential Japanese balance, I thought: to surrender all of yourself to an illusion, and yet somewhere, in some part of yourself, to know all the while that it is an illusion.”

I know that feeling as I got lost on the streets of Tokyo in my 20s. I’ve spent more time in Japan than in India. The Japanese culture places an emphasis on ikigai (purpose), community, and respecting elders. When the Japanese walk, you see intentionality and a focus ahead. Unlike America, there’s much less meandering, people-watching, and window-shopping.

The ritual of Japan stays with anyone who’s spent time there. I visit temples in America to cleanse my mind and renew my faith.

My trips to Japan are like pilgrimages to a holy land. More from one of the greatest chroniclers of that world: Japanese culture-Ikigai-Iyer
