Getting to Yes

It’s easy to become a data vulture in an era where books get skimmed over. Data has advanced modern civilization, but has turned us into attention-seeking worker bees with no time to spare. All kinds of news provides data at the expense of thoughtful deliberation. The human equation can be lost in the age of information. Nonetheless, the decision-making process will consume our working lives until robots become smarter and do the negotiating for us.

Parsing data doesn’t solve problems if we lose our capacity to negotiate. Getting to Yes is one of my favorite books. It’s a bit old-fashioned, but still serves as a blueprint to anyone who has to negotiate their way forward. A stalemate never brings about progress. There are few places in the world where a stalemate can actually extend one’s career (like in  Washington D.C.). The rest of us aren’t so lucky.
