In this familiar tale of haves vs have-nots, a luxury downtown apartment populated by tech employees and wealthy residents offers in-house “live music” as an amenity. The developer launched a creative competition to find a talented musician. Austin’s musicians are now overshadowed by tech entrepreneurs and celebrity transplants.
It wasn’t this way not too long ago. Austin continues to chase right-brained creatives out because of costs. There might be more arbitrage opportunities to keep the artistic talent that drew left-brained workers to Austin in the first place. I like the idea and maybe it’s something more real estate ventures would consider by helping Austin’s displaced musicians get the kind of ‘fair housing’ they deserve. This won’t solve Austin’s NIMBY problem but is a small step in the right direction.
