From Carpools to Code: Solving the Modern Commute

The Evolution of the Commute

In the mid-2010s, West Coast commuting was a 90-minute ordeal. To cope, I relied on carpooling and early apps like Scoop, which kept daily costs under $10. Today, Austin mirrors the 2016 Bay Area: suburbia has expanded 50 miles out, while events remain centralized. This leads to hour-long drives that often make me decline social opportunities. Unless you live in the city center, the “worth it” factor of Austin’s nightlife is constantly at odds with the brutal commute.

Vibecoding a Solution to Coordinate Carpools

At a recent AI meetup, I addressed this friction by building a curated event tool. Using Replit AI, I “vibecoded” an MVP that scans personal emails (like Eventbrite or Meetup RSVPs) to suggest weekly events based on past interests. By automating this curation into a newsletter or landing page, I created a way to signal interest to my network and coordinate carpools effortlessly.

Beyond the MVP

While a newsletter doesn’t fix traffic, it bridges the gap between social desire and logistical hurdles. Version 2.0 of this tool will allow anyone to generate a personalized event feed, making it easier to find carpool partners and ensuring better attendance for organizers. What could have taken months and thousands of dollars to develop was finished in a weekend—a small but effective step toward making a sprawling city feel more accessible.
