Will CIO roles continue to evolve or will these jobs eventually go away?
It’s probably the hardest job to hold onto as tech-savvy CEOs and full-stack engineers become business leaders. The CIO is no longer the only go-to expert for businesses to scale their enterprise systems. Trusted advisors are moving to the cloud. Vendors, customers and millennial employees drive rapid change in this digital age of automation and DIY IT.
Still, most enterprise companies are years away from functioning like Silicon Valley startups.
The smart move for CIOs is to migrate into various domains (Chief Digital Officer, Chief Info Security Officer, Chief Analytics Officer, etc.) or become more product- or customer- focused (Chief Customer Officer).
