Information janitors

New book to be published soon…It’s already on my summer reading list.  A good prelude to this book is a documentary called ‘The Cleaners’ — featured at the recently-held San Francisco International Film Festival. Nearly everyone who logs into the internet functions as a content moderator and information janitor, after large enterprises have done the initial filtering.  The film conveys the harsh life of thousands of low-wage laborers with minimal training — toiling away to curb risks of an unfettered internet. Hopefully, the provocative (and unrelated) book goes much further to highlight the need for oversight.

Whose global village is it anyway? Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and tech companies call the shots and drive democracy. Good work has been done, but more rules are needed.
