Rules for adding connections

I receive a lot of LinkedIn connection requests from people I hardly know. Here are four questions which will help me decide on whether to add someone to my network:

  1. Have you met in person? If not, have you spoken at length based on a strong affiliation like work or a community group?
  2. Is this person a thought leader in your field? Is their news feed active?
  3. Do they give out more recommendations than they receive? It’s not a good sign if someone only receives recommendations and doesn’t take the time to give one.
  4. Does this person like to volunteer? A good person gives back to the community.

If you can answer yes to three or more of these questions, then it’s worth adding them to your network.
