I’m rooting for Naomi Osaka at the US Open. It would be great to see her win here and in Tokyo during the 2020 Olympics. Japan has been the the ultimate bastion of cultural and racial purity for too long. Osaka has probably spent less time in Japan than me. Born in Japan, she was raised in Florida by a Japanese mother and Haitian father.
Can Japan become a multicultural society like the US? Japanese entrepreneurs like Hiroshi Mikitani seem to think so and understand that acceptance of foreigners is critical to growth. I’m familiar with a younger society in Japan that knows multiculturalism is the way forward. Millennials like Osaka blaze new trails.
